The first 1,000 days in a child’s life – from birth to the second birthday – are crucial for healthy development. During this period, weight patterns and lifestyle habits are formed that often last a lifetime. This is again shown in a major report by the UK Academy of Medical Sciences and the Italian Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Publication date: July 2, 2025

At Child Medical Center (KMC), we provide customized care for children and their parents from the very earliest stages of life. From our multidisciplinary approach, we guide families in making healthy choices that fit into their daily lives – with an eye for both physical and emotional development.

What makes those first 1,000 days so important?

  1. Off to a great start
The first two years of life lay the foundation for later health. Factors such as nutrition, sleep, bonding and exercise play a major role in how a child grows – both physically and mentally.
  2. Growing up healthy is not a given for every child
Children from socio-economically vulnerable families have an increased risk of being overweight and obese. This is not a matter of unwillingness, but often the result of limited access to healthy food, safe play space or proper supervision.
  3. Environment determines behavior
The report emphasizes that individual advice on nutrition and physical activity is often not enough. What really works are environments that make healthy choices self-evident – at home, at the nursery, at school and in the neighborhood.
  4. Long-term effects of the pandemic
Although young children are again healthier on average than during the corona years, we see that older children are still struggling with the aftermath. This requires continued attention and support.
  5. Good Health = better opportunities
Children who struggle with obesity at an early age have an increased risk of chronic diseases and even a shorter life expectancy. By investing early, we increase their chances for a healthy and happy life.

What is the role of the Child Medical Center?

At Child Medical Center we support families from early childhood with a warm, approachable approach. With our care team work together to create a sustainable, healthy lifestyle for every child. In doing so, we are mindful of each family’s unique situation.

We believe that every child deserves the chance to grow up healthy. By investing now in those first 1,000 days, we lay the foundation for a lifetime of well-being.
